Yesterday our school hosted Dr Ben Robbins, Clinical Psychologist, Head of Mental Health and Well-Being at Essendon Football Club (formally St Kilda) & ex AFL player, to discuss mental health and performance. We had an amazing turnout, with around 80 in attendance from the Maffra and districts community. Ben is also a former student of St Mary’s.
Ben spoke about ‘Mental Fitness’, explaining that the brain needs exercise to maintain its fitness, just like any other muscle. He gave us insights into the science of how the brain works, particularly when dealing with the many pressures that come from our environments. Ben gave some ideas and strategies to improve the way we think when faced with any scenario. He explained how our brain is wired to think in ‘Blue Brain’ and ‘Red Brain’ and how we can use Mindfulness and Meditation to navigate back to our calm and composed Blue Brain.
We had great responses from the students in the audience and Ben really enjoyed the interactions. Thank you to Charmaine Wilson, our Mental Health and Well-Being Leader for organising the event. Here are a couple of links that give a little more information about Ben and his message.
Please have a great weekend with your families.
Kind regards,
Julian

Super 8s Cricket Day
On the 20th of October we had a HDSSA Super 8s Cricket Day, which was led by Cricket Victoria. The competition was held at the Maffra Cricket Club and we entered 4 teams - two from 3/4 and two from 5/6.
We would like to thank our coaches which were Mr. Blackford, Mrs. R Stobie, David Churchill and Chris Murphy. We appreciate the time you took out of your busy schedules to coach our teams.
As well as the coaches, we would like to thank the Maffra Cricket Club for hosting and the Maffra Secondary students for helping umpire the games.
Lastly, we would like to thank all the students who participated in the HDSSA Super 8s Cricket. We are sure that most students and helper’s had a wonderful day. Although most students are just getting started with cricket, they did a fantastic job. Thank you!

Dr. Ben Robbins Mental Health Presentation
A huge thank you to our school community for coming to Dr Ben Robbins’s presentation last night on mental health and well-being.
It was a wonderful turn out.
I know each person in the room learnt something about themselves, especially their blue and red brain! I hope Ben’s presentation gave you the tools to start or improve your mindfulness practice.
Let’s all continue on our mental fitness journey and reduce the stigma on mental health.

Australia’s largest child safety education and awareness day
DAY FOR DANIEL
Friday 27 October, 2023
Held annually on the last Friday of October, Day for Daniel honours the memory of Daniel Morcombe.
Day for Daniel is Australia’s largest child safety education and awareness day. St Mary's is proud to participate in this day and raise awareness around child safety. Today, our students particpated in a child safety lesson and we encourage parents and carers to start a conversation with your children about personal safety.
Congratulations to our St Mary's grade 5/6 girls basketball team who competed in the school Hooptime competition at Traralgon today. The girls did an exceptional job and made it to the semi-final where they were pitted against St Thomas's. Unfortunately on this occasion they were unable to come away with the win and went down by just 6 points. A big thank you to Mrs Burgiel for her time and effort going into training and coaching the girls. Well done to Peyton, Millie, Mickayla, Evie, Ada, Ella and Mia, you should be very proud of your efforts!
Grade 3/4 Maffra Show visit 2023
What a beautiful day for our grade 3/4 students to visit the annual Maffra Show today. Children made their way to the Show before walking around and enjoying what was on offer this year.
Our Maffra show visit
On Friday 27th of October our ¾ Pod walked to the Maffra show for an excursion.
The ¾’s did many activities today. We learnt about renewable energy and how dehydration affects the body. We got to see the cows getting milked, and one cow made 11L. We got to pat 2 of the calves, one of them was named Belle.
We had a really exciting and fun-filled day. We did lots of amazing activities and we are excited to see the Maffra Show in action.

Socktober - Tuesday 31st October
As a Catholic school community, we are proud to celebrate mission month, to celebrate and raise awareness of all the amazing work that missionaries do for those less fortunate than us.
On Tuesday 31st October, we will be participating in 'Crazy Sock Day', where children can wear crazy socks to school for a coin donation that will go directly to the missionaries.
See this video for information on Socktober 2023:
Financial concessions are available to eligible families. It is important to note, when concessions are provided, there is no impact on the overall school funding situation.
These concessions may include the Camps Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) of $150 per child. Concessions are available through the following two categories.
Category 1: Eligible, means-tested Centrelink Concession Card holders:
A family in which the fee payer holds an eligible, means-tested Health Care Card (HCC) or Pensioner Concession Card (PCC) is automatically eligible for a school fee concession. There is a simplified application form and streamlined approval process.
Category 2: Special Consideration:
A family experiencing genuine financial difficulty and not eligible under Category 1, is encouraged to apply for a fee concession. This application requires detailed information in order that an equitable assessment may be made of eligibility for and level of a fee concession.
Application forms are available from the school office and only need to be completed if this is a new application. Current concession holders do not need to reapply.
