Dear families,
This term has started off with a bang, with lots of amazing things happening throughout the school. Before the term started the Maffra Anzac Day service was held and we had a magnificent turnout from our school community. Our students who represented our school showed great respect to all the soldiers who have fought for our country.
Last Friday we had our school cross country and I was blown away by our amazing school community once again. The way that all the students showed resilience and determination whilst also encouraging each other and having fun was great to see. The day couldn’t have been successful without the staff and the families who were supporting and encouraging the students all day. Well done to Mrs Bec Stobie for her organisation of the day and thank you to our wonderful Parents and Friends providing a yummy lunch.
Next week you may receive a link to complete an Insight SRC survey. This survey is used annually to gather information from staff, students and families about all aspects of school life and this data is used to make key decisions about improvement of the school. I ask you to take a short amount of time to answer these questions to give us the best data to help the school be the best it can.
Please enjoy a great weekend with your families.
Kind regards,
Julian

5th May ~ Keely Lawless
Congratulations to Keely who recently played in a local basketball tournament for Maffra Eagles U/10 girls squad team. Keely helped her team to win 5 games before securing their spot in the Grand Final where they proved too dominant and won that match also. Keely was very nervous to begin with but she showed tremendous courage to take her position on the court. Through her hard work and determination she has improved her skills of shooting, passing and defending.
Teamwork is an extremely important life skill and something that is an implemented in our everyday lives. Kelly's hard work, determination and perserverance has seen her reep rewards and truly enjoy a sport she loves.
Well done Keely!!
5th May ~ Lexi Lawless
Congratulations to Lexi who recently represented Maffra Eagles U/10 girls squad team at a local basketball tournament. Lexi has trained very hard and listened intently to her coach to improve her skills. Lexi helped her team to win 6 games including the grand final. She had to draw on all the skills she has learned at training as well as being mindful of her team matesw to be part of the successful team. Lexi is very proud of her grit and hard work because she was able to see the benefits come to fruition by the close of the tournament. Even though they came up against some fierce competition, Lexi didn't allow herself to be scared or intimidated. She drew on her bravery and put her best foot forward.
Well done Lexi!!
To celebrate student's achievements, we will be presenting children with Star Of The Week awards. This is a self nominated award of something a student is proud of. It could be something academic, sports related, or a personal achievement. Have you learnt to ride a bike? Won 1st place in a dance competition? Read a book by yourself? Anything that makes you proud!
Forms can be found on the link below.
Our Grade 6 leaders had the special privilege of being presented their leadership certificates by the Honorable Darren Chester. Local MP. Darren had all students engaged and provided some great insight to what makes a good leader and his experiences. He also spoke about the electorate of Gippsland, how laws are made, and reminded students about the importance of trying their best in everything they do.
There were some very interesting questions from students..... How old are you? How do you get into Parliament? What's your favourite color? Are you friends with Anthony Albanese? Do you own any wild animals?

Cross Country
Cross Country was at the Maffra football oval/basketball stadium last Friday. All students had to run different distances: Grade 5/6 had to run 3 km, Grade 3/4 2km & Prep to grade 2, 1km. The event was awesome. The people in each house cheered everyone on, and it had a positive effect and set the day for success. The day was just a great success, from the splendid weather, participating students to the awesome parent support! Everyone ran and had a fun time, this was great to see. Curran were the eventual House winners, but it was a close race to take out the Shield. We would like to thank all the teachers, especially Mrs Stobie for organising a great Cross Country day. We would also like to thank the parents for supporting us on the day and the the students for their participation.

The theme for this year’s celebrations is, Catholic Schools – Places of Encounter. ‘Let the words you speak always be full of Grace’, based on Colossians 4:6. Catholic schools are more than just buildings where students come to learn. They are Places of Encounter where students can grow academically, spiritually and personally.” The ‘Speaking with Grace’ theme invites us to consider the power of our words and the impact our words may have on others. Words have the power to inspire, uplift, and transform lives but they can also be hurtful or discouraging. This year’s theme aims to encourage students and those in our school community to use their words to build up others, to speak out against injustice, and to spread love and hope in the world.
Catholic Education Week is an opportunity for all Catholic schools to celebrate our distinctive mission and share features that are special about our schools.
Members of our staff will be attending a Leadership Mass and Dinner to celebrate and recognise outstanding service and excellence of staff and students in Catholic education in our Diocese in Traralgon on Friday, 19 May.
