Dear families,
It’s hard to believe that next week is our last week of the term. It has been such a great term with so much amazing learning happening throughout the school.
The Foundation and Grade 1 and 2 teachers have been implementing the MultiLit literacy program with great success. MultiLit is an evidence based method to teach reading and spelling. This allows teachers to have the greatest impact on the literacy outcomes of students and the students to be engaged and showing great growth in reading and spelling.
I was lucky enough to spend Wednesday and Thursday on camp with the Grade 3/4 students at Forest Lodge Camp. It was so great to see every single child challenge themselves by attempting the activities. Camp is a great place to see students in a different setting and see how they come out of their shells, build great relationships, encourage each other and most of all, have fun! Thank you to the 3/4 teachers for organising and running such a wonderful experience for the students.
Next Thursday is Holy Thursday and in preparation for the special celebration of Easter our school will holding some special events. In the morning at 9:00am we will hold the Easter Bonnet Parade followed by an Easter Egg Hunt. Thank you to our lovely Parents and Friends for organising this. At 11:30 the grade 5/6s will be leading us in Stations of the Cross. We invite all of our community to join us for these events.
Please have a great weekend with your families.
Kind regards,
Julian

24th March ~ Maddie Nicolaci
Congratulations to Maddie who is extremely proud of herself for competing in the recent school house swimming carnival. She won 1st place in all the events she competed in. Maddie pleasantly surprised herself with her fantastic results. Maddie's wonderful attitude of having a go is a great trait to have and will be a huge attribute in her life. She dug deep to find energy to propel her to the finish line.
Well done Maddie!!
24th March ~ Olivia Nicolaci
Congratulations to Olivia who recently swam in our school house swimming carnival. She is very proud of her efforts on the day. She is especially proud of winning 2nd place in butterfly. As a result of her brilliant swim, Olivia represented St Mary's at HDSSA carnival in freestyle. Olivia found determination and will power to achieve her best results. Qualities such as these are great assets to have and will allow Olivia to be the best she can be.
Well done Olivia!!
31st March ~ Nate Hayles
Congratulations to Nate who has been diligently practising his take home readers. He has been committed to practising all his books. He has also shown with hard work and dedication he has been able to improve. Nate is extremely proud too as he can now read his books on his own. Reading books will allow his knowledge to expand and his imagination grow.
Well Done Nate!!
To celebrate student's achievements, we will be presenting children with Star Of The Week awards. This is a self nominated award of something a student is proud of. It could be something academic, sports related, or a personal achievement. Have you learnt to ride a bike? Won 1st place in a dance competition? Read a book by yourself? Anything that makes you proud!
Forms can be found on the link below.
Week 8&9
Ride2School Day
Last Friday was National Ride2School Day and it was fantastic to see so many students and families get involved in the event. In the lead up to the day, we had an average of 8 bike riders and on Friday we had over 90 bike riders and over 20 students walk to school, which is an amazing effort for a small school. It certainly was a vibrant morning with students happily riding around the school, participating in a basketball game, skipping and hula hooping. Thank you to our wonderful community of teachers and parents for supporting the event.
Cross Country
As mentioned in the previous newsletter, we start term 2 off with our school cross country. The cross country will be held at Morison Street Ovals on Friday the 28th of April. All students will participate in the long distance running events. In order for the day to run, I will need parent helpers. If you are available from 9:30am - 11:30am, can you please send me a message on DOJO. Your help would be greatly appreciated!
Art With Meg
This week in art, a lady named Meg came in from the Sale Art Gallery in to show us techniques in painting, in particular water paints. At the start of the lesson she talked about people who put in art work for competitions and the process. Meg told us, that the top 50 art works go into a room, then 1 of them is the overall winner and wins about $20,000, but the art gallery gets to keep the artwork. She brought in a painting that was in the top 50 and that was her favourite. When she showed us the techniques that we can use , it was really interesting.
Then she told us what we're gonna be doing. We had a plastic rectangle piece with dish soap on it, next you had a paint brush that you dip it into the water, choose a paint colour, and paint it on the plastic. We could use as many colours as we wanted. Once you’ve done that, there is paper sitting in water and you pull it out and dry it with the newspaper on the table. You then sit the paper over the top of the plastic and press it down with a spoon. After that if you still have paint left on the plastic you can do that again, but it will turn out very different. We also did the exact same thing but with a smaller piece. Then we let it dry.
It was a fun and interesting experience with Meg and we thank her for her time.
